Today i will be installing proxmox. If you want to follow allong i will be leaving here a detailed instructions how i did it. I allways wanted to have a Server of Server’s and with Proxmox we can actually do that.
But first what is Proxmox.
What do you need:
- Computer with minimum 8gb of ram.
- Computer need to have 2 disk’s .
- USB drive to put proxmox iso.
- LCD monitor ,mouse and keyboard (just to install and configure).
- Rufos to make your usb drive bootable.
- Proxmox iso.
My machine is made of old parts computer that I had laying around. I bought a fancy rack case because later on i will be mounting this machine in a rack. For storage you need to use 2 disk’s one for proxmox and the other to storage the Virtual disk, they need to be both empty without partitions. I will be using a normal hdd that i had laying around for proxmox and SSD for the virtual disk’s.
Install Proxmox
To start the installation i will need to create usb bootable device, i will be using rufos for that.
Plug in your usb device (the device needs to be empty otherwise you will loose the data inside), open rufos select your usb drive and proxmox image. Then you hit the start button at the bottom as you can see in the image on the right.
When it finishes will be promted a success message.
Then you need to plug the usb device in your computer and boot from it. This step may be different for you because it depends on the Bios of your mainboard.
When you boot you will see the screen from proxmox you just have to hit enter to Install proxmox VE
Then you will see the End User License Agreement. You need to agree otherwise you are unable to install. In the next screen you need to select in what drive you want to install proxmox. In order to proceed without any errors at the end you need to open the options and select ext4 as a file system.
In the next screen you will need to select time zone, just insert what is the right one for you. Then you will need to setup a root password and if you want you can give your email, if you dont want this you can just insert “[email protected]” in order to proceed.
Then you need to select want is your preferred network card and ip address. I just leaved all as default just changed the hostname, you can also change for something you prefer. Then you will be prompted with a summary of your configuration just hit Install to proceed.
Then grab some coffee because this step can take a little bit.
When the installation end the machine will reboot and you will be booted to the proxmox wait until you see like the bellow picture. Take note from the ip address and type it in other machine browser. At this point you will no longer need the usb device, keyboard, mouse and monitor anymore.
In the browser you will see a warning message just select proceed anyway.
Just login with root at insert your the password that you defined early.
Then it will appear a message saying that you don’t have a valid subscription, proxmox is free but you can buy support plans. This message will always appear every time you login, later maybe i will do a post saying how can you disable it.
Now we need to assign the storage for the virtual disk that we will be creating later on. Just follow the image and then will appear a new window. I don’t have a image for this step but is very easy, just select the disk and then click create.
Note: the disk need to be empty without any partitions on it otherwise will not appear here.
You have successfully installed proxmox.
